Target Audience: This course has been developed to allow for an intensive review of data typically used in the clinical evaluation of sleep. For details regarding exam content, structure, purpose, please visit the ABIM website. The course is designed to assist those preparing for exams and for those who need review for daily practice.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this course participants will have increased confidence regarding their ability to score data from sleep studies. Other measures commonly used in the evaluation of sleep/ wake disorders will also be reviewed. The ability to recognize abnormal events and to identify artifacts will be improved. Interpretation skills will be enhance.
Format: Small group workshops will allow for enhancing confidence in the pattern recognition skills necessary for scoring sleep stages and other physiologic data gathered for evaluation of sleep/wake disorders. Polysomnography (including MSLT and MWT), Actigraphy and other measures will be reviewed. Protocols and procedures will be reviewed. Interpretation / Report formulation skills will be enhanced. All discussions include latest AASM revisions. There will be limited didactic presentation. This is an active, highly participatory, educational program.
Course content is in keeping with current standards and guidelines.

Clinical Polysomnography and Sleep Medicine

Target Audience: Physicians, dentists, surgeons, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, school nurses, orthodontists, sleep technologists, technicians, polysomnographic technologists, sleep health educators, dental hygienists, dental assistants, physical therapists, speech and language therapists, myofunctional therapists, respiratory therapists, EEG technologists, psychologists, clinicians, and other health care professionals interested in the management of sleep disorders, including technical aspects of polysomnography and interpretation of studies.
This course is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive review of the basics of sleep medicine in a highly structured lecture format complemented by informal hands-on workshops. Clinicians will augment their scoring, report formulation, and sleep laboratory quality control capabilities through intensive review sessions.
Sleep medicine requires a high degree of interaction between the technical and medical components of the sleep disorders diagnosis and treatment teams. Feedback from participants indicates that clinicians and technologists enrolled in the same course has many benefits.

- the clinical aspects of normal human sleep
- the preparation of patient and equipment for sleep monitoring
- sleep stage scoring and abnormal events recorded on the polysomnogram
- the symptomatology of sleep disorders and differential diagnoses

Pediatric Sleep Medicine Course

Target Audience: Physicians, dentists, surgeons, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, school nurses, orthodontists, sleep technologists, technicians, polysomnographic technologists, sleep health educators, dental hygienists, dental assistants, physical therapists, speech and language therapists, myofunctional therapists, respiratory therapists, EEG technologists, psychologists, clinicians, and other health care professionals interested in the management of sleep disorders, including technical aspects of polysomnography and interpretation of studies.
This course is designed to focus on the developmental aspects of normal infant sleep and sleep disorders in infants, children, and adolescents. Methodological considerations for the laboratory evaluation and diagnostic and treatment issues for this patient population are reviewed.
